How much do Pet Photographers Charge?

How Much Do Pet Photographers Charge?

If you're considering professional photos of your dog, cat or horse, one of the first questions that usually comes up is:

How much does pet photography cost?

The answer varies widely. Some photographers advertise sessions for a couple hundred dollars, while others offer custom portrait experiences that can cost several thousand.

As a professional pet photographer with 10 years in business, I’ve seen the full range of pricing models and understand why they differ.

Here’s a realistic look at what pet photographers charge and why.

Typical Pet Photography Pricing

Across the industry, professional pet photography generally falls into three broad pricing categories:

Budget / Mini Session Photographers

  • $100-$400

  • Often includes a short session and digital files

  • Limited time and product options

Mid-Range Pet Photographers

  • $400–$1200

  • Session fee plus image purchases

  • Some printed products or digital collections

Full-Service Pet Photographers

  • $1500–$4000+ client investment

  • Custom sessions

  • Professional printed artwork and products

  • Guided ordering and product design that fit into your home

Every photographer structures their pricing differently, but the experience and final results are usually what separate these tiers.

What I Charge for Pet Photography

I am a full service pet photographer, my session fee is $200, which reserves your pet’s portrait session and covers the time and planning that goes into photographing your pets. If you're considering professional portraits of your dog or pet, you can learn more about my pet photography sessions in New Hampshire and what is included.

After the session, clients choose how they’d like to display their images. Most people invest between $750 and $4000+ depending on the artwork they select.

I specialize in printed products/artwork because I believe photographs should be enjoyed every day; not just stored on a hard drive. Many of my clients choose wall art, albums, folio boxes or desk prints so they can see their pets every day.

Why Pet Photography Prices Vary So Much

If you’ve researched photographers, you’ve probably noticed pricing is all over the place.

From my experience, three things influence pricing the most:

Experience

Photographing animals is very different from photographing people.

Pets don’t pose on command, they get distracted easily, and every session requires patience and timing. With a decade of experience, I’ve learned how to read animal behavior and capture the personality of each pet. See portrait and action examples in my portfolio.  I can also recommend the location that fits well with your vision and where your pet will be most comfortable.

That experience also includes professional recognition. I hold several photography degrees, including Master of Photography and Associate Colleague of Photography, and was honored as NHPPA Photographer of the Year in 2025 by the New Hampshire Professional Photographers Association. I am continuously honing my craft through workshops and tutorials so I can deliver the best photographs of your pet.

Product Quality

Not all prints and products are created equal.

Professional labs produce archival prints designed to last for generations. The wall art folio boxes and albums I offer are built to preserve your pet’s story.

Business Costs

Professional photography businesses carry expenses many people don’t realize exist:

  • professional equipment

  • insurance

  • editing software

  • archival print labs

  • education and training

  • licensing and business costs

  • studio expenses

These factors all contribute to the overall investment. I generally invest 10-20 hours per session working on your images and artwork. It's not just a matter of clicking the shutter button.

Why Pet Photography Matters More Than People Expect

One thing I’ve learned after photographing pets for years is this:

People rarely regret doing the session. They only regret waiting too long.

Just last month, a client contacted me because their dog was getting older. The dog wasn’t sick; just slowing down a bit; and they wanted to capture some portraits while she was still doing well.

We completed the session in January.

By the time their artwork was delivered, their dog had unexpectedly passed away.

They told me how grateful they were that they didn’t wait.

Moments like that are why I do this work.

The Value of Professional Pet Portraits

Sometimes people see the price and wonder why professional pet photography costs what it does; especially when there are photographers offering “everything for $250.”

The difference often comes down to experience, quality, and the final artwork.

Working with animals requires patience, skill, and the ability to capture fleeting expressions and personality.

And when those images are turned into tangible artwork — something you see on your wall every day — they become more than photographs.

They become part of your home and your memories.

One Last Thought

Pets are with us for such a short part of our lives, but they fill our homes with so much personality and love.

Whether you hire me or another photographer, my biggest piece of advice is simple:

Don’t wait until it's too late to photograph your pet.
